You know, normally I try to keep my political feelings to myself, out of respect for the fact that everyone everyone has the right to struggle with these kinds of questions and come up with the answer that is right for himself or herself. But it is the weekend before Election Day 2008 here in America, and some I find some surprising feelings welling up inside me.
I have been in Barack Obama’s camp since probably May or so. I’ve even given 2 small donations. But I haven’t talked about it much. I’m a white guy, usually conservative, and my neighborhood is FILLED with McCain/Palin signs. We don’t have an Obama sign because my wife is still undecided … it would hardly be right for me to ignore her opinion and put up a sign.
But as I look at the unbelievable historic turnout at early voting, I start to feel something. It is magnified when I hear an occasional comment from an acquaintance or two that the early voting is driven by African Americans voting for Barack. I realize that Barack is probably going to win this election, and no one will know where I stood on the matter. So here is where I stand:
I AM A WHITE GUY AND I AM PROUD TO VOTE FOR BARACK OBAMA!!! HE IS A TRUTHFUL, INTELLIGENT, KNOWLEDGEABLE, EXTRAORDINARILY QUALIFIED, INSPIRING INDIVIDUAL. AMERICA IS THE “LAND OF OPPORTUNITY”, AND BARACK IS ABOUT RESTORING AND STRENGTHENING THAT OPPORTUNITY, NOT JUST FOR BLACK PEOPLE, BUT FOR ALL PEOPLE. AND IT NEEDS TO BE RESTORED. THAT IS AT THE CORE OF WHAT MAKES THIS A GREAT COUNTRY, AND I AM PROUD TO TAKE A STAND AND BE A PART OF IT.
America has been designed from the ground up to be a place where anyone can achieve, if they are willing to make the sacrifices and do the hard work. What that means is NO ONE is shut out unfairly. And in many ways America lives up to that goal. I believe it is the best place in the world at that. But we are by no means perfect at it.
However, that goal is worth everything. For a place to exist that truly lives up to that vision means that humankind really does have hope of coming out of the caves and reaching a degree of nobility. Such a place would be the most beautiful, most crowning jewel of mankind’s creation … far surpassing the pyramids, the seven wonders of the world, the tallest buildings, travel to the moon and beyond. When we can say that we have actually created a “place” where anyone can achieve, regardless of race, religion, political beliefs or socio-economic background, THEN we can rejoice at our progress and admire our handiwork.
Which candidate will do the most to move us in that direction? For me the answer is absolutely clear.
I, CHARLES RAY FLOWERS, AM PROUD TO VOTE FOR BARACK OBAMA!
UPDATE: It is now a little after midnight, and I wrote the above post about 12 hours ago (rough guess). Several times today I’ve come back and re-read it, and I always walked away thinking, “Yes, that’s exactly right.” So, there’s really only one thing to add …
“I’m Charlie Flowers, and I approved this message!”
